Student Earns Prestigious Florida State University IDEA Grant

Published October 5, 2019

On Tuesday, Interior Architecture and Design Senior, Eva Johnson, successfully presented months of research and programming at the 2019 President’s Showcase of Undergraduate Research Excellence after earning the Scott and Ina McNichols Undergraduate Research Award this past spring. Her project, Bonsai and the Art of Display, synthesized lessons learned at conventions, Bonsai master’s collections, museums, nurseries, and historic gardens across the United States and in Japan. Eva writes, “to improve display techniques for products, bonsai displays were evaluated in different environments to trace elements of effective display design. A design framework, assembled from these observations of line, proportion, balance, route, and materiality, informs effective display techniques utilizing these fundamentals, and is designed to be applied to any display environment.” The resulting display piece is an inspired millwork design that draws the viewer in with its clean lines, warm materials, and intriguing movement. The department would like to congratulate Eva on a job well done and thank Professor Stephanie Sickler for her contribution as supervising professor.
