Interior Architecture and Design Students abroad in London

Third-year students from the Department of Interior Architecture and Design took advantage of the opportunity to study abroad in London during the Summer of 2019. Professor Jim Dawkins led students through 18th century history to the present with visits to key site such as the Inigo Jones Banqueting House, the John Soane House and Studio, the All Saints Church, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Design Museum, and the National Theatre, which is an excellent example of Brutalism. The trip coincided with the Clerkenwell Design Week which held 150+ showrooms, designer/architect offices, and pop-up exhibitions. The students also traveled to Oxford and Cornwall, which gave them the opportunity to see some of the English countryside as well as important historical sites.

Jim Dawkins reported that the students took advantage of every opportunity.

There’s nothing like being active in the learning, and participating in the history itself. Everything comes off the page and is physically “real”—the 3rd dimension of being in, on, or around the space, place, or building validates the class instruction and makes all the student reading relevant and meaningful in real-time and in real-place.
