2013-2014 Lectures Include:

  • May Sun – Thursday, September 26th, 2013 7pm

May Sun is an LA-based artist working in sculpture, multi media, installation, and photography.  She often refers to aspects of her Chinese heritage in her work, which consistently crosses cultural and political boundaries traditionally separating art forms and disciplines.  Her public art commissions include the Hollywood and Western Red Line Subway Station in Hollywood, CA; the Rose Kennedy Greenway in Boston, MA; and the Robert F. Kennedy Inspiration Park at the site of the former Ambassador Hotel in LA.  Her works draw inspiration from the history and surroundings of the sites.

  • Joe Delappe – Thursday, October 17th, 2013 7pm

Joe Delappe directs the Digital Media program at the University of Nevada and works in electronic and new media, gaming performance, sculpture, and electromechanical installation.  In 2006, he began the project “dead-in-Iraq” and typed the consecutive names of American military casualties from the war in Iraq into the American Army’s online first person shooter recruiting game.  More recently, in 2013, he rode a specially equipped bicycle to draw a 460 mile long chalk line around the Nellis Air Force Range to surround an area that would be large enough to create a solar farm that could power the entire United States.

  • Conrad Bakker – Thursday, November 7th, 2013 7pm

Conrad Bakker makes copies of real things using wood and paint.  He places these simulated objects in specific sites and gallery installations to comment upon and make tangible the economies and networks that connect things to persons, places, and other things.  His “Untitled Projects” are often located in a variety of consumer contexts that range from eBay and Craigslist to sidewalk sales, shops and galleries, promoting a strange push and pull of fake things performing as real, critical commodities.

  • Katerie Gladdys – Thursday, November 14th 7pm

Katerie Gladdys’ artwork and research interrogates and re-presents marginalized spaces such as agricultural land, abandoned groves and orchards, sanitary canals, the liminal zone between suburban and rural, housing subdivisions, the occasional national or state park, domesticity and disability and the digital images of landscapes generated by satellites that populate the nightly news. She seeks to transform mapped landscapes and familiar interactions into alternative geographies that transmits her own sense of wonder in the ubiquitous, encouraging others to look more closely at what constitutes their everyday existence.

  • Will Lamson – Thursday, January 23rd, 2014

William Lamson is an American installation and sculpture artist, working from Brooklyn, NY.  His work includes small performances and actions that create objects and images. His works include “A Line Describing the Sun,” a 366-foot arc carved into the Mojave Desert by sunlight focused through a lens, “Diving Meteorology,” a communications tower transformed into a musical instrument, and “Solarium,” a hilltop chapel/greenhouse made with panels of caramelized sugar.

  • John Ensor Parker – Friday, February 14, 2014 7pm

John is a Brooklyn based curator, painter and new media artist whose work draws upon both analytical and primitive processes. In addition to gallery exhibitions, his large-scale public art pieces include: “To the People of Orlando” a city block long permanent public art installation, mapping projections on the façade of The New Museum and Manhattan Bridge Anchorage. He was a visiting artist and instructor of Art & Science at Eugene Lang College | The New School for Liberal Studies. Current projects include “Mixed Botany”, a public art commission for a series of large-scale interactive light sculptures at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and a solo exhibition at Galeria Carles Taché in Barcelona.

  • Craig Drennen – Thursday, March 27th 7pm
