STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS

Shana Williamson and Leslie Hallquist were 2009 IDEC Graduate Student Travel Scholarship recipients to attend the 2009 IDEC South Regional Conference, October 14-17 in Raleigh, NC. 

Winners at the 2009 College Awards Night: the D.J.M.T. O'Brien Scholarship [$1500] went to Katie Logan. The Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award [$250] went to Adrienne Kautz and the Outstanding Graduate Research Award [$250] went to Tracie Kelly. The Interior Design Advisory Board Scholarhips [$500] went to Carole Robards (undergraduate) and Stephanie Sickler (graduate). The $500 Criddlebaugh Scholarships (bestowed by the Dean of the College) went to ID graduate students Noelani Ferguson and Shana Williamson.

Rachelle McClure was one of the university winners of the 2007-2008 Research and Creativity Awards. She competed against other masters and doctoral students across the university. The award carries a stipend of $500. Of the six university winners, Rachelle was the only winner not to be a doctoral candidate!

The Scholarship Committee of the International Association of Lighting Designers Education Trust was pleased to announce that Shadie Wiland was awarded a stipend in the amount of up to $1,500 USD to attend the 19th Annual LIGHTFAIR International Trade Show and Conference, the largest lighting convention in North America.  This year, LIGHTFAIR will be held on 28-30 May 2008 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Shadie was also awarded a full travel stipend to the 2007 IALD Annual Conference in Montreal, Canada. That stipend was for $1200 and was only awarded to 13 students in the US by the IALD Education Trust.

The 2008 College Recognition saw several Interior Design students receiving important scholarships. The D.J.M.T. O'Brien Scholarship [$1000] went to Dominique LaManna. The Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award ($250) went to Lindsay Clark and the Outstanding Graduate Research Award ($250) went to Rachelle McClure. The Interior Design Advisory Board Scholarhips ($500) went to Christina Grove (undergraduate) and Brad Ertzberger (graduate). The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) Outstanding Student  Scholarship went to Jacintha Anderson, $500. The FSU candidate for the ASID Meredith Lacey Award was Tezja Ardissone.

IIDA Student Career Day 2008 (held in Jacksonville) saw the following FSU winners in the Student Design Awards 2008: Honorable Mention, Corporate Design:  Stephanie Moss, $100; and Honorable Mention, Institutional Design:  Amy Kelly, $100

Lindsay Clark was selected as one of eight Interior Design Educators Council Foundation Graduate Scholars for 2008.  She will be receiving a check for $1000 to pay her expenses to attend the 2008 IDEC Annual Conference to be held in Montreal, Canada.

It was recently announced that Veronica Fannin's wallcovering design entry in the national Source One Design Competition was chosen as one of three "Hospitality Student Merit Winners". "The Source One Design Competition continues to draw a lot of excitement," said Randy Scholes, Source One Brand Manager. "In fact, the submissions more than doubled compared to last year. Source One looks forward to the opportunity for one or more of these winning designs to be added to the Source One Exclusive collection."

The 2007 College Awards Ceremony saw several Interior Design students receiving important scholarships. The D.J.M.T. O'Brien Scholarship [$1000] went to Anne Littlejohn. The Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award ($250) went to Lindsay Clark and the Outstanding Graduate Research Award ($250) went to Tessa Newbill. The Interior Design Advisory Board Scholarhips ($500) went to Tiffany Rolle (undergraduate) and Tommy Crane (graduate). Florida Commerce Credit Union Corporate Office Design Competition was announced by bank official Kristin Richardson. They were: Undergraduate Awards Verena Dalati ($150) and Naomi Stroh ($100); Graduate Awards Melissa Mroz ($150), Sarah Zorn ($100), and Avery Goodman ($50).

At the 2007 American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) Florida North Chapter Student Career Day was held at the FSU campus. ID student Katrina Kostik won the $750 Meredith Lacey Champion Senior Scholarship (awarded through portfolio review and personal interview.) Matthew Woodham won the $500 ASID Chapter scholarship. Competition winners ($100) included Alyssa Prohias (First Place in the Commercial Design category and First Place in the Healthcare Design Category), Verena Dalati (First Place in the Education/Research category and First Place in the Residential Design Category), and Brad Ertzberger (First Place in the Hospitality/Retail category).

IIDA Florida Student Day 2007 saw FSU students Katrina Kostik and Alyssa Prohias sweep the awards for the corporate design category! Katrina received first place ($200), and Alyssa got honorable mention ($100). In all 38 students from FSU attended the event held in Tampa.

At the 2006 American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) Florida North Chapter meeting in Pensacola, FL, ID student Lauren Sapiega won a $500 ASID Chapter scholarship and the $750 Meredith Lacey Champion Senior Scholarship (awarded through portfolio review and personal interview.) 33 FSU interior design students attended the Chapter Weekend.

Lora Moore was the recipient of a $1000 Scholarship Subsidy from IALD: International Association of Lighting Designers. The scholarship will be used to cover travel and lodging expenses for the IALD national conference held this year at the Rancho Bernardo Inn in San Diego, California (October 19 - 21, 2006.) There were ten scholarships offered nationally to students who wished to attend their annual conference based on an essay competition and letter of recommendation.

The winning design for Tallahassee's bus shelter competition was submitted by the team of Avery Goodman, Elizabeth Smallwood and Emily Perkins (all First Professional graduate students.) There were 11 total submissions to the city-wide competition coming from students, local architects and citizens. The top three prizes went to our Interior Design students. Second Place was won by Elizabeth Hale, Krupa Patel and Jennifer Williams, and Third Place went to Sarah Zorn, Laura Smiley, and Rachelle McClure. Plans are to have the winning design actually built by the city for public use. The bus shelter project was completed in Tock Ohazama's graduate design studio.

An IIDA recent press release announced Bridget Dunn as winning the "Best in Competition" in their 2006 national student sustainable design competition. Bridget's project for an underprivileged women's clinic using a sustainable design approach for construction and materials selection won her the honor. She will receive a $750 cash award and a trip to this year's GreenBuild conference. Bridget was also featured prominently on the FSU main website for this honor.

At the 2006 College Awards Ceremony the following scholarships were announced: the D.J.M.T. O'Brien Scholarship [$1000] went to Lauren Howell. The Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award ($250) went to Pam Andras and the Outstanding Graduate Research Award ($250) went to Shan Shandghag. Utrecht gift certificates were awarded to Kimberly Stange and Tabitha Rudd in recognition of their committment to the major.The above scholarships/awards were based on scholastic excellence.

Each year the Network of Executive Women in Hospitality, Inc. awards scholarships in Florida to female Interior Design majors. The award is based on scholastic ability, and portfolio performance in technical, graphic and studio aspects of interior design. The 2005-2006 recipients of this prestigious award ($2000) are seniors Anna Daugherty and Kristen Smiley. Students in the Interior Design program at Florida State University have been awarded this competitive scholarship for the past 10 years.

The 2005 ASID/IIDA Student Day (held in Gainesville, FL) proved a great venue for FSU design students. Competing against other interior design programs across north, central and west Florida, Staci Hobbs’ project for the One Touch Financial Bank won Best Retail Design [$200] and she ended the day with the win of Best Overall Project [$1000] from all categories for her Google Corporate office project. Shelly Joiner won the Meredith Lacy Scholarship for Best portfolio [$750]. Carolyn Fleetwood came in First Place [$500] in the mock NCIDQ competition. Congratulations to all our scholarship and award winners!
