Alumni Spotlight: Katie Hart

Published October 5, 2015

Katie HartKatie Hart will graduate from Florida State with a Master of Science in Interior Design in December of 2015. She passed the LEED Green Associate exam in August 2014, and is currently preparing for the LEED AP ID+C exam this year. Katie also completed her Bachelor of Science in Interior Design and her Bachelor of Arts in Art History at Florida State in 2009 and 2011 respectively.

In the midst of working on her master’s degree, Katie began work as curator at The Grove, a historic house museum and grounds in Tallahassee. Built ca. 1838, the Greek Revival house at The Grove has recently undergone extensive rehabilitative efforts and stands to become one of only a handful of historic homes to receive LEED certification. Katie says of her work at the museum,

I have found that my education in interior design is serving my job as curator well.  Before opening the museum to the public, I have had the unique opportunity to work with a team of historians to discuss visitor experience concepts and safety concerns in selecting the use of spaces and exhibit layouts submitted to an exhibit design company.  I am particularly excited to be able to help educate visitors about the importance of historic preservation, maintaining a sense of place, and how the historic built environment can serve to inform future sustainable building practices.
