Department Office

Letter from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Interior Architecture and Design! The department has a long and proud tradition at Florida State University with many accomplished students, faculty, and alumni. We strive to impart a strong sense of community among faculty and students. Although Florida State is a large university, the department is a cohesive collection of 200 undergraduate and graduate students who support and mentor each other.

Students are provided with a strong foundation on which to build their design skills beginning with design fundamentals, and progressing through theory, graphics, business, technology, history, and studio classes. The program is sequential and classes build on one another as students advance in the program. It is always exciting to watch students grow and mature in their design sensibility.

The demand for Florida State University interior design graduates is coming from all around the country. Employers cite FSU graduates’ strong preparation, especially in creative thinking, design process, computer technologies, and studio projects that are varied and grounded in research. The 2016 placement rates showed that of the 60 students who graduated that year, 97% of undergraduates and 100% of graduate students were employed within six months of graduation.  Firms attribute FSU’s success to strong faculty/student interaction and mentoring, as well as the excellent preparation students receive.  We welcome you to be part of our exciting program.
