Department of Interior Design / Undergraduate / Undergraduate Curriculum

Undergraduate Curriculum

The interior design program has two paths to enter the major.  

1.) Students starting their four-year college career at FSU will take the following:

YEAR 1 FALL

  • Design Fundamentals I
  • Survey of Interior Design
  • FSU Liberal Studies Classes

YEAR 1 SPRING

  • Design Fundamentals II
  • (Students changing their majors after fall semester is underway may take Design Fundamentals I and Survey of Interior Design in the Spring semester)
  • FSU Liberal Studies Classes

Once students have completed these three courses, they may participate in FIRST YEAR REVIEW. 

YEAR 1 SUMMER

2.) Students transferring to FSU or FSU students changing their major after their freshmen year may complete their first year classes in the summer. Please note that these classes often fill up fast, so it is advisable to connect with the department the fall before tor the summer you wish to start. 

Course taken in summer for those beginning the program are:

  • Design Fundamentals I
  • Survey of Interior Design
  • Design Fundamentals II

Once students have completed these three courses, they may participate in FIRST YEAR REVIEW.

Admittance to the Program:

Following Spring and Summer FIRST YEAR REVIEWS, up to 40 students will be admitted for continued study in the program.  From that point students will follow the following path:

YEAR 2 FALL

  • Interior Design Studio I
  • Graphic Techniques I
  • Social/Psychological Aspects of Design
  • FSU Liberal Studies Classes (if still needed)

YEAR 2 SPRING

  • Furniture Design Studio
  • Graphic Techniques II
  • Computer-Aided Design I
  • Materials and Methods
  • FSU Liberal Studies Classes (if still needed)

YEAR 2 SUMMER

  • Internship (elective)
  • Ringling Experience (elective)

YEAR 3 FALL

  • Interior Design Studio II
  • Construction Documents
  • History I
  • Construction Systems
  • FSU Liberal Studies Classes (if still needed)

YEAR 3 SPRING

  • Interior Design Studio III
  • Computer-Aided Design II
  • Sustainability
  • Lighting
  • FSU Liberal Studies Classes (if still needed)

YEAR 3 SUMMER

  • Internship (elective)
  • Study Abroad (elective) 
  • Ringling Experience (elective)

YEAR 4 FALL

  • Interior Design Studio IV
  • Portfolio Development
  • History of Interiors II
  • FSU Liberal Studies Classes (if still needed)

YEAR 4 SPRING

  • Interior Design Studio IV
  • Business Practices
  • History of Interiors III
  • FSU Liberal Studies Classes (if still needed)

YEAR 4 SUMMER

Students may opt to graduate in spring (if they meet at other FSU requirements) or take the following in their last summer:

  • Internship (elective)
  • Study Abroad (elective) 
  • Ringling Experience (elective)

Note: Summer Study Abroad is best taken during the Summer term of the Junior Year, but may be taken following graduation in the final summer.
